14th October 2014Ms A Farnum-Davies
On Saturday 11th October, we were very excited to open our doors and offer a range of workshops to Heartlands High School students and their families.Parents, carers, siblings and cousins all got stuck into different learning activities including making clay sculptures, experimenting in the lab, practicing their P.E.As and creating UV photo prints.  The feedback on this event was fantastic and we look forward to offering similar experiences to our local community in the future. If you have any ideas or suggestions about family learning activities, please email tessa.hall@heartlands.haringey.sch.uk. SEARCH DAY 1 – Friday 12th September

10th September 2014Ms A Farnum-Davies
Our first SEARCH day of the year is this Friday 12th September, SEARCH Days are our days of active learning and are very popular with the students.

On SEARCH days we finish at the normal times for the school day at 15.10pm, except on Fridays where we will finish at the new time of 13.50pm.

This Friday 12th September we will be  holding a Year 7 parents ‘meet and greet session’. This is a chance for new parents/carers to get to know your child’s tutor.

Current students from Years 8-11 will be dismissed at 13.50pm – even Year 11, who usually have PE for two hours on Friday afternoon.

All our Year 7 students will stay on site until 14.20pm or until their parents/carers arrive for their meet and greet session.

We will ask Year 7 parents and carers to enter via the Main Entrance from 14.00pm. Please do not come before as we will be dismissing the other year groups. Your child will then come and collect you from the Central Forum and take you up to meet the tutor.

If you wish to come and meet your child’s tutor please complete the reply slip on the letter sent home on Tuesday 9th September  and ask your child to return it to the Main Reception by Friday 12th September by 8.30am. This will enable us to assess numbers.

This is a fantastic opportunity to discuss the first two weeks transition period for your child and discuss how you feel the start at Heartlands has gone.

The feedback we received from all those who came along was nothing but positive, ranging from ‘an awesome afternoon’ to ‘exhilarating’.    Mr Scullion & McArdle, Coordinators of the Fete

Well done to all the winners on the day – and there were many!

Year 10 Trip to Cambridge

30th June 2014Ms A Farnum-Davies

photo 3

On Friday 13th June, 24 of our Year 10 students visited Clare College, Cambridge, to kick-start their 6-week course in conjunction with the Brilliant Club. Students participated in ‘University style’ seminars and lectures, with subject matter ranging from philosophical debates in ethics to cutting-edge research on individualised cancer treatments.

All participants were given the opportunity to explore the University campus in glorious sunshine, including a visit to a college library, college halls, and seeing students punt down the river Cam. Our Year 10s thoroughly enjoyed the day, gaining a deeper understanding of the university application process, student life and how to succeed in achieving their high aspirations. For the next 6 weeks, they will be attending tutorials lead by a PhD student, leading up to a university-style essay due in on Wednesday 6th August.  if successfully submitted, this will be followed by a graduation trip to another University. How exciting!

Thank you to Ms Style and Mr Barker for escorting the students to Cambridge.

Year 9 ‘Whizz Bang’ Science Lecture

17th June 2014Ms A Farnum-Davies

Dr SzydloYear Nine were rewarded for their hard work in Science this year by having a ‘whizz bang’ lecture from Dr Szydlo.

The demonstration was centred around the GCSE Carbon Chemistry unit as well as touching on some of the fundamental concepts of Physics. It involved magic water that changed colour when a violin played in D minor, ping pong ball rockets, liquid nitrogen and lots and lots of fire!

Jena said: “He was insanely amazing! My favourite bit was when the green balloon exploded- it caught everyone by surprise!”

Year Nine listened intently and were a fantastic audience. We look forward to Year Nine continuing their GCSE preparation with this much enthusiasm.
