Heartlands Arts Showcase

1st July 2015Ms A Farnum-Davies
On Friday 26th June we were very proud to show off the dance, drama and music skills of our Year 7-10 students, as well as display artwork by our GCSE Art and Photography cohort.
We’d like to thank all our fantastic performers and the staff and PTA members that supported the event for entertaining family and friends with their creative talents.
Students who are keen to be involved in our big musical in December should speak to Miss Miller now and keep an eye out for further details. For further examples of student artwork, follow @artheartlands on twitter.

Year 9 Physics Trip

26th June 2015Ms A Farnum-Davies

On Monday 22nd June, some of our Year 9 Scientists spent a day at Alexandra Park School, looking at Physics in Sport and Medicine. The day consisted of three sessions: ‘Speed and Power’, ‘Medical Physics’ and ‘Aerodynamics and Vision’.

In the first session, the students used a Wattbike to find out their power output and could compare themselves to household appliances and cars. They calculated their running
speed and acceleration too.

In the Medical Physics session, the students enjoyed using ultrasound scanners to look at their kidneys and hearts and they had a great time trying on a radiation suit.

The final session on aerodynamics and vision saw students sticking their heads into a wind tunnel with different hats on to see which was most aerodynamic, and trying on goggles which simulated different types of vision problems.

Year 8 Visit to Queen Mary University

23rd June 2015Ms A Farnum-Davies
‘Exciting’ and ‘wow’ are a few words the year 8 students used when they attended the Science festival at Queen Mary University.
The students were free to look around the Science market and try out some of the activities, some students found out if they were more impulsive than a Zebrafish!  Other students were listening to their heartbeats through speakers, there was also a small handheld speaker where you could essentially feel someone’s heartbeat.
Students had the opportunity to listen to three interactive discussions, one was called ‘snot’, ‘sick’ and ‘scabs’ and was about body defences, Two of our students were ‘scabs’!
