Vacancy – Parent Local Governor on the Local Governing Body

8th June 2017Hill

We have provision for two Parent Local Governors to be part of the Local Governing Body. Bolu Heather has now stepped down as one of those Parent Local Governors. We wish to thank Bolu for all her hard work, support and commitment to the school during her time in this role.

Parents and Carers are now invited to nominate and elect a new Parent Local Governor to join the Heartlands High School Local Governing Body. An elected Parent Local Governor must be a parent or a person who has parental responsibilities of a student registered at Heartlands High School.

The vision is for all our students to develop a commitment to learning; teaching students that effort is essential, achievement will carry them forward, active citizenship matters and that none of this can be achieved without the highest of aspirations.

The role of a Parent Local Governor is an exciting and important opportunity to take an active role in the governance of the school; enabling that vision to become a reality through ensuring high standards of achievement for all, contributing to strategic discussions and holding school leaders to account by monitoring school performance and ensuring money is well spent.

Attached you will find:

  • Notice of the vacancy
  • Information about the role and how to stand for nomination and election
  • Details regarding eligibility
  • Nomination form

Closing date for nominations is 9.00 am on Monday 26 June 2017.

Sixth Form Consultation

5th May 2017Hill

Sixth Form Consultation

HHS_Sixth Form Consultation_Leaflet_webgraphic_2

Heartlands High School was opened in September 2010. The school is popular and oversubscribed within the local community.

The Directors, Governors, parents, staff and pupils at the school have long held the ambition to provide education beyond the age of 16 to those students that would like to study Level 3 A levels. We have the highest aspirations for students within the school and it is fitting that we should help students to realise their ambitions by providing high quality A Level teaching to those young people that wish to go on to study at university.

We are required, prior to putting in an application to the DFE to undertake a formal period of consultation. We are genuinely interested in hearing your views and would, therefore, like to open a consultation with all stakeholders and the community on extending the age range of Heartlands High school to 11–18 and to opening a Sixth Form Centre within the school from 2019. Please find below a leaflet that gives you information on how to respond to the consultation. You may also access the information and survey here:

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/heartlandssixthform

We will be holding a consultation event on the 6th June at 18:00. This event will be for parents or members of the school community that have questions or concerns about the proposal. The consultation period will close on 26th June 2017. Following that, Directors will consider responses on making a decision about whether or not to submit an application.

Vacancy Notice for Governing Body

18th April 2017Hill

Print

We are currently looking to appoint to our governing body

  • 2 x directors to our board
  • Independent trust members

Directors
Directors/Trustees take responsibility for overseeing the strategic direction of the Trust. They determine the Trust’s vision and values; its strategic and financial plan; annual objectives and targets for the Trust and will monitor progress against them. They ensure that the Trust fulfils its statutory and legal obligations, including the approval of key policy documents. They appoint the CEO and set arrangements for performance management. The Board of Directors/Trustees is a vital role within the Trust.

You will be required to attend 5 x Board meetings per year plus other ad-hoc meetings as required. The role is voluntary, all reasonable expenses in accordance with the Trustees and Governors Expenses Policy; including travel and childcare may be reimbursed.

We are specifically looking for people who have:

  • extensive professional financial management skills and experience; and
  • experience of chairing boards, committees and panels within large organisations

Independent Trust Members
The role of a Trust member is extremely important, overseeing the achievement and objectives of the Trust and aspects of its governance. The role of a Trust Member is one step removed from that of a Director/Trustee. While Trust Members have a ‘hands off’ role, they are crucial in maintaining an overview of the effectiveness of the trust structure and holding the Directors/Trustees to account.

You will be required to attend 2 meetings per year. The role is voluntary, all reasonable expenses in accordance with the Trustees and Governors Expenses Policy; including travel and childcare may be reimbursed.

We are specifically looking for people who have:

  • a passion for, and commitment to, the education and development of young people
  • experience and skills in any one of the following areas: financial management, education, business management or have community links in and around Haringey

Collaborative Art Project to be exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery

15th March 2017Hill
DSC_0260 copy

We have now hosted two art workshops with artist Sadie Edgington, working with our talented Year 8 students as part of the Start project, sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation, Children and the Arts charity, and the Saatchi Gallery. The students were fantastic, working together to create sculptural pieces representing the theme of ‘Inclusion’ and then creating stop-motion animations featuring these artworks. Sadie and Roz Logan, visiting from the Saatchi Gallery, were so impressed by the students’ ability to think creatively, embrace challenges with an open mind, and work collaboratively. The project has served as a great reminder of how art can be used to empower young people to explore important themes and ideas. The animations they have created will be shown at an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in July. We can’t wait!

Summer exam timetables and guidance

15th March 2017Hill

Exams season is fast approaching and Year 11 students are working hard to prepare themselves for their public examinations which begin in a matter of weeks. At this stage, Year 11 students should be using the mantra of ‘3 hours per day, 5 days per week’ or ‘15 hours’ as a guide to the amount of independent study they need to be doing to succeed in the Summer. Please click the link to view the Public Examination timetable. Students will shortly receive their personalised exam timetables but this is the complete schedule of all exams so parents and students can plan around these important dates.

Year 11 Summer Exams Timetable – Parent’s Guide (pdf)

Other students in the school are also gearing up for the exam season. Now that most GCSE qualifications are assessed wholly through exams, it is more important than ever that students develop sound revision and exam skills. Students from Year 7 to Year 10 will sit tests in the Summer Term which will mirror those they will sit for public examinations over the next few years. They will also experience sitting some exams in the Sports Hall, so that they are prepared for the regulations and routines of the real thing. More information will follow about how you can support your child to develop vital study skills so that they are well prepared for these assessments. The timetables are provided below so that you are aware well in advance of the key dates. The AFA4 report to parents will summarise the results of these end of year assessments and will arrive at the end of the Summer Term.

Resources
There is a wealth of information available on the internet about supporting your child through exams and revision. Below are a couple of links to websites which we feel give straightforward and practical tips to parents. We emphasise the importance of balance to students so that they ensure they eat well, sleep well and exercise regularly to ensure that they cope physically and mentally with the demands of exams. We also speak to students about ‘delayed gratification’; putting in the hard work for a period of time to achieve great rewards later on rather than being distracted by short term diversions. This self discipline is critical if students are to prepare themselves well for examinations. Parents play a very important role in motivating, supporting and keeping students on track during revision periods.
