Battle of the Bands 2016

14th July 2016Ms A Farnum-Davies
Huge congratulations to all of the performers in Battle of the Bands; what an exciting evening! It was a fantastically diverse showcase of the different talents we have across Years 7-10 at Heartlands High School.
Tensions were high as staff collected and counted the votes, as there were so many deserving performers. Particular recognition goes out to winners in the band category ‘Unoriginal’ (Tarrel Dixon, Flynn Geddes,Thant Thura, Jared Brandy, Issack Hango, Devante Seepaul-Craig) and soloist winner Darya Laksari.
Thank-you to friends and family who supported the event, and to Mr Barker and Ms Lloyd for all their hard work in preparation and on the day itself. We look forward to more musical clubs and special events next year.

Students take part in Somme Commemoration at Westminster

8th July 2016Ms A Farnum-Davies

Heartlands was invited to take part in the national commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. On 1st July 1916 nearly 20,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on the Western Front in France.

Lauren Sheriden,  Gerold Biris, Tijana Uludag-Whyte, Mario Likcani and Toby Glover-Meyer attended a service at Westminster Abbey on the evening of Thursday 30th June. The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prime Minister were all in attendance.

Tijana read the story of Private John Jackson at 6am on Friday 1st July whilst the other students stood for fifteen minutes in silent vigil around the tomb of the unknown warrior.

‘The students and staff at Heartlands High School are incredibly proud to be asked to take part in the commemoration events to mark 100 years since the start of the battle of the Somme. Our students are keenly aware of the importance of such an anniversary and this event enables them to connect with the incredible sacrifice and loss of the time. It is humbling to be a part of it.’  Mr Garrill

Public Art Workshops

4th July 2016Miss C Dee

We recently reached the end of long-term project which involved 40 students in year 8 and 9 working with the Saatchi Gallery and Jack Petchey foundation. The students visited the Saatchi Gallery twice for tours, artist talks and workshops, then participated in two workshops in school to create their own large-scale paintings. The final part of the project took place in Gillett Square, Dalston, where they created inflatable scupltures, practised their photography skills and persuaded members of the public to interact with their artworks. They took photos of people posing in front on their paintings; the resulting images celebrate not only the creativity of our students, but also London’s diverse and friendly community.

A letter from the Headteacher

29th June 2016Ms A Farnum-Davies

29th June 2016

Dear Parent and Carers

I want to give you some information on how the school is responding and coming to terms with the outcome of the EU referendum .

Whatever your political views we need to remember, in all of this, the children, parents and the adults that work or are a part of the Heartlands Community, that are not UK citizens.

We are a strong community. A vote like the one last week may well create fear and anxiety amongst some families and some children. Our job as educators, acting in loco parentis, is to ensure calm and provide stability for the children and the people that are part of our community. This school is founded on inclusivity and equality of opportunity. That is what we stand for.

Since Friday some young people, particularly from families who are not citizens of the UK, were anxious about what the future might hold. As a school we will continue to offer reassurance, comfort, demonstrate optimism (even when it is hard) and show that we are as welcoming to all, as we we have always been.

I am sure that many of you have taken the time to talk through the issues with your own children. We have encouraged our staff to do the same here.

The governors and all the staff at Heartlands are proud of what an aspirational and inclusive community this is. We will make sure that we continue to be outward looking.

With best wishes.

Simon Garrill
Executive Headteacher

East Mersea Residential Trip

27th June 2016Ms A Farnum-Davies

Thirty girls attended a weekend residential in East Mersea last weekend, and pushed themselves out of their comfort zone by taking part in a number of challenging activities. It was great to see so many pupils taking part and overcoming their fears.  The girls were optimistic and resilient and performed fantastically in all of the tasks. It was a brilliant weekend!

Shout outs to:
Annie Donlon and Shanyah Davies for resilience.
Mariam Matovu and Codie Sapla for risk-taking on all the activities.
Keyonte Brisset for determination.
And Fay, Mary and Zuzanna for their enthusiasm.  Well done to all of them.
