All students at Heartlands High School take part in our careers programme, beginning in
Year 7 and continuing throughout their time at the school. Provision differs between year groups, as the programme is designed to meet the students’ changing needs as they progress through the school. Please see below for more detailed information concerning
each year group.
Years 7 & 8
Students in Year 7 and 8 take part in a range of activities throughout the year. All students take part in a University Trip and meet Careers advisor in helping to support their choices
or GCSE and beyond. Each student receives opportunities to visit a wide range of industry during SEARCH Days and specific department trips.
Year 9 & 10
In Year 9 and 10 students gain access to a range of as well as introducing them to the concepts of higher education and apprenticeships. Through SEARCH Days and PSHE their units include Negotiation, Personal Finance, and Careers Pathways. They also take part in a Career talks to speak to a range of employers from a range of sectors. In year 10 all students receive a work experience placement for one week which allows them to access a career path they have an interest in.
Year 11
In Year 11 students have further support to develop their decision-making and employability skills. All students are supported through applying for Post 16 choices which includes apprenticeships. During Year 11, guidance interviews help students choose their post-16 options, and they are invited to attend a number of Sixth Form Taster Days with external providers. During Tutor Time students use UNIFROG to help them make plans for their career and higher education. If needed, students are supported crafting their personal statement, and in writing their CV. There are opportunities for students to apply for mentoring with our partners at 10x Banking.
