At Heartlands High School, we teach music to ignite a passion for music: fostering musicianship, creativity, and curiosity to empower students on a journey of self-expression and lifelong musical exploration. Through the curriculum students develop a sense of teamwork and cooperation; build their self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment; and instil in them an appreciation for the arts. We also have a vibrant extra-curricular programme which enables students to continue to develop their skills and musicianship outside the classroom.

Our main practical music space is equipped with whole class sets of instruments that include: keyboards, djembes, ukuleles and samba. Students also have access to a wide range of instruments such as guitars, drum kits and a range of tuned percussion. Our second classroom houses a suite of Mac computers installed with the latest music production software, enabling students to develop their confidence in composition and music production.

There are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in music making, whatever their skill or prior experience. These range from after-school enrichment activities, one-to-one instrumental tuition and a number of performance events throughout the school year.

Learning an instrument at Heartlands

We work closely with Haringey Music Service to provide instrumental lessons from qualified and experienced tutors. There is the opportunity to continue lessons from primary school or start as a beginner. Lessons take place during the school day in our practice rooms.

Heartlands is committed to enabling all students, no matter their background, to have access to musical tuition. As a school we have ensured that prices are competitive in comparison to private music tuition and there are a number of options available for students to receive discounted lessons. All students who are recipients of Free School Meals or Pupil Premium qualify for free lessons and all GCSE music students receive free lessons.

We have an instrument library so if your child does not own an instrument to practise on at home they can be borrowed from the music department at Heartlands or the Haringey Music Service (Visit the Haringey Council website for more information).

We offer tuition on the following instruments: Violin, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Voice, Piano, Drumkit, Guitar (electric/bass/acoustic).

Extra-curricular clubs

There are lots of lunchtime and after school clubs that students can join. From Choir to band practice, brass ensembles to music producers. There is something on every day to enrich students’ music experience. An updated list of music clubs for students can be found on the Music Notice board on the N5 corridor.

In addition to their lessons, these students access a range of extra-curricular music opportunities which have included performing in the Royal Albert Hall, participating in the annual Whole School Musical and performing in events such as Battle of the Bands.
