It is with great sadness that it is being reported in the national media and on social media that a former Heartlands student, a 17 year old young man, was stabbed on the 19th January 2021 on West Green Rd. It is reported that he died in the early hours of the 20th January 2021 in hospital. Our thoughts are with his family who have been devastated by these events. This is a tragic loss of a life at such a young age.
Police are yet to officially name the victim. We will not confirm his name in communication until this point; out of respect for his family. The death of any child is both shocking and incredibly upsetting. We are aware the sudden, violent and senseless nature of his death will make it even more difficult for us all to process.
I have written to parents, I will write to students tomorrow and I will continue to communicate throughout the coming weeks. As adults it is often very difficult to answer the questions children have in situations such as this. These links might help you in how you can help children process this;

Police were called at 21:10hrs on Tuesday, 19 January to West Green Road, junction with Willow Walk N15, following reports of a stabbing.
Officers attended with LAS and found a male, aged 17-years-old, suffering from a stab injury.
CPR was administered at the scene before the victim was taken to hospital. Sadly he was pronounced dead at 04:25hrs.
His next of kin are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.
At this early stage there have been no arrests.
Homicide Detectives are investigating led by Detective Chief Inspector Jane Topping.
Acting North Area Commander Superintendent Simon Crick, said: “This is a dreadfully sad loss of life and I understand how shocked the community will be. I want them to know that they can expect to see more officers in the area and to approach them if they want to discuss any concerns or share any information.”
Enquiries are ongoing and a crime scene remains in place.

The Heartlands family are devastated to learn of the death of their dear friend and colleague Mr Hazeez Ekeolere. A life cut tragically short; our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time.
Hazeez was a beloved colleague and mentor to our students. He worked at Heartlands from 2015-2018 and served the students with passion and dedication which we all admired. The Heartlands family are heartbroken at the loss of this young, talented and honourable man. We will miss him dearly.
Hazeez was loved by all he had contact with. He was a warm, funny and loyal man. He was professional, dedicated and passionate about improving the lives of the young people. He had recently excelled in his teacher training at a North London university and joined a school as a Geography teacher. He kept us updated of his progress and we were all incredibly proud of him.
As we all try to come to terms with this news some of you may need support or wish to show your support to the family and send messages of condolences. The Heartlands family have opened an online condolence book HERE for you to share your memories, thoughts and photos of Hazeez. We will, when the time is right, share this with the family.
We will also be considering how best to permanently honour Hazeez, he was a keen football player and coach to school teams and so we will look to reflect this in a tribute to him onsite. We hope to hold a memorial in school when we can as well as contribute and share in any remembrance events his family hold in the coming weeks and months.
Tributes left at the school will be held safe and displayed next to the year10 gate for all to see, we welcome these tributes on Monday when staff are available to help with putting them somewhere safe. Pictures of these tributes will be placed in the condolence book along with copies of any notes or cards received.

With everything going on, reading, whether it’s comics, audiobooks, or an old favourite – is one of the best things children can do for their brain, their emotional wellbeing and their grades.
Whilst we are Heartlands at Home, we are encouraging all students to read for 20–30 minutes a day.
We have put together a 1 page guide on where you can get eBooks, audiobooks, interesting podcasts, Youtube stories – all for free and without getting off the sofa! Remote Reading The second page has some top tips for keeping up reading at home. Please make sure you check my notes for age appropriateness.
How can I help?

Support them to complete the 20–30 minutes reading by reminding them as you would with remote learning

Ask your child to show you what they are reading and ask them questions about it

Listen to your child read. It is not essential that you sit with them (though this is nice) it could be whilst you doing things around the house

Watch a film based on your favourite book with your child and discuss how it is different

Encourage students to quiz on Beyond Words once they have finished a book and to tell their tutor about it during their zoom session.

As part of our supporting learning series we are excited to introduce:
Lauren Skuse 
An expert on SEND provision in the mainstream
Lauren Skuse has worked with young people with SEND for over 12 years. She is an SSAT Lead SEN practitioner and has completed the National Award for SEN Coordination. The idea behind the project is to engage mainstream teachers in developing their SEN skills and experience in the classroom.
The SEND Champion Project is aimed at all mainstream school staff who want to further develop and extend their understanding of how to adapt the classroom for SEN learners. It is suitable for all stages: early years to A level. It is suitable for all staff roles leaders, teachers and support staff.
The project will run over 10 weeks between 11th Jan – 26th Feb 2021. Each week, a new 20 minute video on a different aspect of SEN, with an accompanying quiz will be released. These include entries from: Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, a Literacy specialist and mental health professionals. The idea of each session is to help improve understanding on SEN within the classroom and strategies that you can use as a mainstream member of staff to meet these learners needs.
